Soft Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 large egg yolk + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

    Activate Yeast:

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water and yeast.
  2. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Make Dough:

  4. Add salt and sugar to the yeast mixture.
  5. Gradually mix in flour until a dough forms.
  6. Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  7. Let Dough Rise:

  8. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  9. Shape Pretzels:

  10. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  11. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces.
  12. Roll each into a long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
  13. Baking Soda Bath:

  14. In a pot, boil 9 cups of water with baking soda.
  15. Dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
  16. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  17. Egg Wash & Salt:

  18. Brush pretzels with egg wash.
  19. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  20. Bake:

  21. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

  23. Serve warm with cheese dip, mustard, or enjoy plain
